About the Role

Works under the supervision of a pharmacist to process orders for medications that require special handling, preparation and/or accountability. The technician maintains expertise and skill in the safe handling and use of medications which require special handling, preparation and/or accountability.

Responsibilities

• Process orders for medications requiring special handling, preparation, or accountability
• Safely handle and manipulate cytotoxic and other special drugs, including working aseptically in a vertical flow hood environment
• Maintain Investigational Drug Research Records and validate doses using Investigational Drug Protocols
• Maintain pharmacy inventory (lift, carry, stock) and deliver prescriptions to nursing units
• Use a computer keyboard (typing approximately 25 WPM)
• Read, interpret, and utilize literature related to special-handling medications to develop or modify departmental protocols in consultation with a supervising pharmacist

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Valid Pharmacy Technician license from the State of Michigan
• At least one year of experience as a Hospital Pharmacy Technician and/or Retail Pharmacy Technician (retail experience applies only to medication history positions)
• Ability to maintain records and perform calculations
