Campus Technician - Electrician

About the role

The Campus Technician - Electrician is responsible for the overall repair and maintenance of the physical plant of Allegany College of Maryland, including the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service, and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and facilities.

The Electrician monitors the performance of electrical systems, troubleshoots problems, and makes adjustments as necessary. They may also perform routine mechanical work using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing devices to repair or remodel existing structures according to work orders or verbal instructions.

Responsibilities

• Respond to and complete all work orders, both emergency and routine, involving electrical or general repairs.
• Initiate repairs to mechanical and electrical equipment and facilities, including inspecting and testing systems to diagnose faults and malfunctions.
• Perform skilled mechanical maintenance, such as installing, operating, maintaining, modifying, servicing, and repairing electrical systems and equipment.
• Monitor system performance, troubleshoot problems, and make necessary adjustments or repairs using hand and power tools and precision measuring devices.
• Provide estimates for repair or replacement costs beyond the capability to perform.
• Ensure the proper operation of mechanical machines and devices, including pumps, engines, motors, conveyors, compressors, and laboratory equipment.
• Repair existing structures according to work orders or verbal instructions, including planning, assembling, fabricating, and installing materials or fixtures.
• Perform basic electrical work, such as replacing faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, breakers, and other components, and installing new conduit, wiring, and electrical machinery.
• Maintain and repair existing electrical wiring, equipment, and installations, and provide cost estimates for repairs beyond capability.
• Assist with documenting repair costs by keeping records of time and materials charged to each job and providing periodic status reports to supervisors.
• Practice preventive maintenance by performing spot checks, oiling moving parts, cleaning and servicing tools and equipment, and managing repairs or replacements.
• Interpret blueprints and specifications as needed.
• Operate a dedicated energy management system to monitor energy-consuming equipment.
• Attend training workshops coordinated through the Physical Plant.
• Assist in custodial operations and participate in the snow removal program as needed, including weekends.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Physical Plant.

Requirements

• Journeyman/journeyperson electrician license.
• Minimum of four years of related experience.
• Preferred: Additional experience as a journeyman/journeyperson level electrician and/or lead electrician capacity.
• Experience troubleshooting and repairing fire alarm systems, security systems, cameras, door locks, scoreboards, and other electronic devices found on campus.
• Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Skills

• Comprehensive knowledge of electrical systems, equipment, and apparatus carrying less than 13,000 volts.
• Thorough knowledge of basic mathematics, including area, volume, weights, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the electrical trade and electrical codes, including Underwriters Rules for wiring and installation.
• Skilled in using and maintaining tools and equipment of the electrical trade, including testing equipment such as ohmmeters, battery and buzzer testers, and oscilloscopes.
• Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
• Ability to prepare summaries and reports and communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.
• Ability to learn and use the work order system.
• Ability to work from lifts, ladders, and scaffolding, and manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies (up to 70 lbs.).
• Ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions while wearing personal protective equipment.
