Job Summary

The Campus Safety position oversees the safety of the school campus with attention to the welfare of students, employees, and visitors (school community) while on school grounds. These functions include but are not limited to observing and interacting with students, personnel, and visitors; enforcing truancy and disciplinary policies; reporting pertinent information to school administrators that have potential impact on the general wellbeing of students, personnel, and visitors; and supporting administrative and campus activities. This position requires the ability to rationally and reasonably exercise professional judgement.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Fingerprinting and successful completion of a criminal background check are required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely, and effectively in English.
  • Professional workplace etiquette and representing the school/department in a professional manner.
  • A valid Utah driver’s license and evidence of insurability with an acceptable driving record that will be verified annually.

Prior Experience and Skills

  • Previous work experience in security or law enforcement, or related field.
  • Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in another language besides English, Spanish highly desired.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, such as Word, Excel, and use of data-based software.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Assist school personnel with maintaining the safety of the school community and facilities.
  • Establish appropriate relationships with students to promote a positive learning and working environment.
  • Respond to emergency situations to address immediate safety concerns.
  • Assist with the supervision of assigned school activities.
  • Direct traffic and parking on campus; check vehicles for proper parking authorization; determine if unauthorized vehicles are parked in restricted areas.
  • Check school security systems such as alarm systems, locks, gates, and doors to minimize and eliminate potential security issues and unsafe conditions (video cameras are monitored by other assigned personnel).
  • Monitor student behavior before, during, and after school, such as in the lunchroom, classrooms with substitutes, detention, and hallways to ensure student compliance with established regulations and maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Identify visual or aural cues such as facial expressions, body language, physical surroundings, noises, etc., to accurately identify potential areas of concern or inappropriate activity.
  • Communicate information regularly with relevant school personnel to coordinate efforts to maintain a safe learning and working environment.
  • Adhere to and apply school, district, and legal policies and procedures. Inform the school community of school policies and enforcement procedures to ensure an understanding of and potential consequences of policy or procedural violations.
  • Immediately refer incidents to appropriate site personnel (e.g., injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, etc.) under the direction of administrative guidelines.
  • Prepare standard documentation (e.g., incident and activity reports, security logs, etc.) to provide written support and convey information.
  • Work with other safety personnel (e.g., SRO and other campus safety staff) to help maintain a safe learning and working environment.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and other district employees.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective function of the work unit.
