Job Summary

The Campus Area Network (CAN) Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, maintenance, and optimization of campus-wide network infrastructure across a regional area. This role ensures reliable, secure, and high-performance connectivity across multiple buildings and locations while supporting wired, voice, video, and data communications services. The engineer collaborates with IT teams, vendors, security personnel, and business stakeholders to deliver scalable network solutions that align with organizational objectives and technology standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Network Design & Implementation
    • Design, deploy, and maintain campus network infrastructure including LAN, WAN, and data center connectivity.
    • Configure and manage network devices such as switches, routers, KG's and related network infrastructure.
    • Develop network architecture diagrams, standards, and technical documentation.
    • Plan and execute network upgrades, expansions, and technology refresh projects.
  • Network Operations & Support
    • Maintain network performance, availability, and capacity using network management tools.
    • Troubleshoot complex network issues and coordinate resolution with internal teams and vendors.
    • Perform root cause analysis and implement preventive measures.
    • Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 support for network-related incidents and service requests.
  • Network Security
    • Implement and maintain network security controls, including VLAN segmentation, NAC, VPNs, and access control policies.
    • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to address vulnerabilities and security incidents.
    • Support compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
    • Participate in security audits and risk assessments.
  • Infrastructure Management
    • Manage IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, and network services.
    • Maintain network inventory, asset records, and configuration backups.
    • Support disaster recovery and business continuity initiatives.
    • Ensure network redundancy and high availability.
  • Project & Vendor Coordination
    • Participate in infrastructure projects from planning through deployment.
    • Coordinate with contractors, service providers, and equipment vendors.
    • Evaluate emerging networking technologies and recommend improvements.
    • Aid with budgeting, procurement, and lifecycle management of network equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Compute Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or related field (or 10 years of hands-on experience).
  • 3 - 7 years of experience in network engineering or network administration.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, switching, and network protocols.
  • Experience with enterprise networking environments and multi-building campus networks.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco, Juniper, or similar networking platforms.
  • Knowledge of network monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Understanding of network security principles and best practices.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical issues and develop effective solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as: Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, Juniper Enterprise Routing and Switching (JNCIS-ENT).
  • Experience with network automation tools such as Ansible, Python, or Terraform.
  • Familiarity with cloud networking technologies and hybrid network environments.
  • Experience supporting large enterprise environments.
