Campaign Assistant Director

Fund for the Public Interest · North Carolina, United States · 2 wk ago
On-siteManagement$40k–$54k/yrFull-time

About the role

We’re hiring and training Canvass Directors to make an impact on critical environmental issues—protecting wildlife and wild places, eliminating plastic waste polluting our oceans, ensuring clean air and water, and more. While solutions exist, we need to educate, engage, and mobilize people across the country to create lasting change. Canvass Directors build public support through one-on-one, face-to-face conversations, generating deep, long-term engagement beyond online petitions or news cycles. This position requires independent judgment and decision-making in matters of significance.

We have immediate openings as well as positions starting throughout the year. As a Canvass Director, you will:

  • Educate and engage the public on campaigns like protecting wildlife, moving beyond single-use plastics, and stopping electronic waste.
  • Build support and fundraise for leading non-profit groups, including Environment America and PIRG.
  • Hire, train, and manage your own team.
  • Work with the most effective citizen outreach operation in the country—we’ve raised over $700 million, run hundreds of campaigns in all 50 states, and mobilized millions of people.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment in decision-making.
  • Work independently to meet staffing, campaign, and fieldwork goals.
  • Build public support through face-to-face conversations in communities nationwide.

Qualifications

We’re looking for candidates who:

  • Have leadership experience.
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Are committed to working hard to create lasting, positive change on important issues.

Training

We offer an excellent training program, including:

  • Hands-on training in an existing canvass office.
  • Classroom-style training on social change concepts and skills.
  • Advanced trainings throughout the year on staff management, canvassing, campaign strategy, and other skills for new and experienced directors.

Locations

We work where we can make the biggest impact. Canvass Directors must be geographically flexible, though location preferences are considered. Current campaigns are running in:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • D.C.
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • North Carolina
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • Washington State
  • Wisconsin

Pay and Benefits

Target annual compensation: $40,000–$53,750, depending on position and location.

Benefits include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents.
  • Paid sick time (60–80 hours/year, depending on location).
  • Vacation time (10 days in year 1, 15 days in year 2, 20 days in year 3 and beyond).
  • Commuter benefit program.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • Parental leave.
  • Long-term disability insurance.
  • Needs-based student loan assistance (where applicable).
  • Opportunities for advancement.
