Camp Counselor

Essential Position Duties & Responsibilities

• Encourage children to participate in group activities.
• Aid campers with various activities, mealtimes, participating in events or projects, cleaning up from projects, etc.
• Daily set-up and cleaning of activity area and recreational equipment as needed.
• Help maintain a quality summer recreation program for the individual participant and for the unit, keeping in mind the needs of each individual child.
• Enforce the safety rules in the camp and know where the campers are at all times.
• Lead campers in fire drills and emergency procedures as required.
• Promote a positive environment and, under the guidance of a supervisor, handle discipline issues as they arise.
• Provide Department assistance as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to remain calm when dealing with various situations and make decisions that follow camp policy.
• The ability to understand and comply with workplace rules and policies.
• Must be able to work and cooperate with others, resolve problems, and possess a positive attitude while contributing to and maintaining a safe, productive, and respectful work environment.
• Must always represent the department in a positive and professional manner and serve as a reliable source of information about department programs and activities.
• Ability to act as a role model for young children.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral &/or written instructions.
• Ability to express maturity in thought, work habits and responsibility.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective & courteous working relationships with youth, their parents, other park staff, community organization partners and the general public.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors for long period of time.
• Ability to stand or sit for an extended period.
• Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and twist both ways.
• Ability to run or jog at a moment’s notice.
• Ability to lift 25 lbs without assistance.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• Previous experience working with youth is a plus.

Prior Experience

• CPR/AED & First Aid certified, or the ability to become certified.
