About the role

The position involves direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp setting. The role requires creating positive, nurturing relationships with children and their parents/caregivers, promoting the potential of all youth, and facilitating peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safety of children at all times through appropriately supervising program participants at all times while maintaining YMCA and state licensing staff to child ratios, providing aid when needed, and ensuring daily cleaning and maintenance of facility.
  • Affords assistance in implementing age-appropriate techniques relative to the behavior management of children.
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Must attend and manage students during all field trips.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Fulfills YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; Associates Degree preferred.
  • Experience: 1-year experience working with children; in a day camp setting preferred.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc… preferred.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Required to be fingerprinted
  • Medical clearance and Immunizations
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Must receive ODJFS (Ohio Department of Job and Family Services) licensing certification within 30 days of hire.

  • Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  • Willingness and ability to be a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect.
