About Sky Mountain Outdoor Education Center

The Sky Mountain Educational Center is owned and operated by the San Joaquin County Office of Education and is located in Placer County on 62 acres of conifer forest. Students participate in a residential outdoor educational program, staying in cabins with private restrooms. Meals are served in the lodge on Lake Valley Reservoir.

About the Role

Under the direct supervision of the site Director and project lead, the Camp Caretaker will live on-site and work independently to perform skilled maintenance for all camp facilities, including buildings, grounds, equipment, mechanical operations, water, and septic systems. As the primary on-site representative, the Caretaker ensures security, maintenance, cleanliness, and customer service, providing a safe and attractive environment for guests, staff, volunteers, and contractors. During winter months, additional responsibilities include snow removal and maintaining camp accessibility.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general camp maintenance for buildings, grounds, equipment, mechanical operations, water, and septic systems.
  • Serve as the primary on-site representative for security, maintenance, cleanliness, and customer service.
  • Oversee contractors and ensure a safe, clean, and attractive environment for all visitors.
  • Handle winter responsibilities, including snow removal and maintaining camp accessibility.
  • Duties are performed after hours, on weekends, and as needed during the week.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and a good driving record.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience as a camp host, grounds keeping, custodial, building maintenance, or customer service.
  • Experience working in an outdoor parks and recreation setting.
  • Experience driving heavy equipment.

Year-round, 20 hours per week (4 hours per day), with pro-rated salary.
