Camp Cabin Leader (official title: Outdoor-Education Assistant)

About the role

We anticipate multiple part-time Camp Cabin Leader (official title: Outdoor-Education Assistant) vacancies across the District's three outdoor education camp sites. Immediate vacancies are anticipated at the Canyon Creek site in Lake Hughes, with additional opportunities at Clear Creek (La Cañada Flintridge) and Point Fermin (San Pedro).

Assigned hours: up to 20 hours per week, depending on location or camp-site needs. Employees must stay overnight at the education center for 2 nights during their assigned shift.

• Solid understanding of safety rules, student behavior standards, and basic first-aid procedures
• Ability to supervise students in recreational, dining, and program-based activities while enforcing safety and disciplinary rules calmly and effectively
• Strong interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with students and staff
• Modeling and promoting proper health practices, table manners, and respectful personal behavior
• Physical capability to participate in and direct strenuous outdoor activities, including lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds
• Manual dexterity to assemble and dismantle equipment
• Enthusiasm, dependability, and a collaborative spirit

Requirements

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent; training in outdoor education, physical, or natural science is preferable
• Experience: Teaching, coaching, or leading camping, scouting, or other youth group activities is preferable
• Certifications:
  • First-Aid Certificate (American Heart Association or American Red Cross) required within 60 days of appointment
  • CPR Certificate (American Heart Association or American Red Cross) required within 60 days of appointment
  • Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguarding Certificates (accredited organization) are preferable for some positions
• Valid California driver’s license or alternative transportation method

Duties may require a variable work schedule, including weekends and evenings. Overnight sleeping facilities are provided at the outdoor-education center.

Responsibilities

• Supervise students during activity periods, meals, and overnight in cabins (including entering sex-designated cabins, restrooms, and shower rooms)
• Support Naturalist-led trail lessons and field studies by supervising students, redirecting focus, and managing instructional materials
• Ensure students practice proper self-care: hygiene, meals, hydration, sunscreen, rest, and bedtime routines
• Assist with expanded learning activities, including conservation and recreational projects
• Respond to student needs and concerns during overnight hours
• Monitor student behavior in cabins, restrooms, and shower rooms to prevent rule violations or unsafe activities
• Supervise packing/unpacking of personal belongings
• Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly outdoor-education center
• Set up and remove tents, activities, supplies, and program equipment for opening/closing programs
• Assist students with loading/unloading personal belongings in transport vehicles
• Provide basic first aid and seek medical care when necessary
• May assist in unloading and storing supplies and equipment

Pay

$24.30 hourly
