Camera Control Operator
About the role
The University of Virginia seeks a Camera Control Operator to provide surveillance support and information for police, security, and other emergency responders for criminal and/or other emergency incidents. Camera Control Operators independently observe camera feeds to identify criminal incidents and suspicious activities, supporting emergency responses or contacting emergency personnel.
Responsibilities
- Independently observe and identify criminal incidents and suspicious activities from approximately 3,900 cameras.
- Direct cameras to locations associated with police or emergency responses as identified from radio transmissions.
- Provide information that contributes to officer safety, identifies criminals, and reduces property losses.
- Follow specific oral and written instructions and safety procedures.
- Communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrate technical savvy and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Complete the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) operator training before or during employment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 6 months experience in a security position or in a position dealing with the public required.
- Active and Valid Virginia Driver’s License preferred.
Qualifications
- Prior work or volunteer experience in safety, security, or law enforcement is preferred.
- Some college education is preferred.
- An active VCIN certification is preferred.

Pay
Starting salary is $52,000 annually ($25 per hour base pay). Additional $1.50 per hour for night shift assignments.
Schedule
This is a full-time (40 hours per week), non-exempt-level, benefited position. The position is designated essential personnel in support of 24/7/365 operations that includes nights, weekends, and holidays. The position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
