Job Description and Duties
The incumbent is responsible for preparing Project Initiation Documents (PIDs) under the direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer. Specific responsibilities include:
- Conducting engineering feasibility studies
- Preparing conceptual plans based on preliminary geometric designs
- Calculating preliminary cost estimates
- Writing draft and final reports
Requirements
Possession of a valid California Drivers License is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle. A Professional Engineering License is required for Range D.
Qualifications
To be eligible for hire, you must be on the state examination list for the Transportation Engineer, Civil exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions), you must pass the Transportation Engineer, Civil exam.

Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.
Schedule
While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. Incumbent may also be required to travel and work outdoors and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and/or extreme heat or cold. Periodic travel is required for fieldwork and training.
Pay
The starting salary range for this position is $6,488.00 – $12,152.00. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
