About the role

The Research Support Specialist II will manage the Shared Environmental Analysis Lab (SEAL), a newly established core analytical facility that supports research and training in environmental chemistry and environmental quality. SEAL provides analytical services, instrumentation access, and technical expertise for faculty, students, and collaborators requiring analysis of soil, water, air, and tissue samples.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and/or supervise a sophisticated maintenance program for critical equipment and materials.
  • Develop and implement quality control measures for laboratory experiments.
  • Provide technical support and training to users of the lab.
  • Manage and develop analytical capabilities within the lab.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and proper waste disposal procedures.
  • Collaborate with faculty and students to ensure the effective use of the lab facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in chemistry, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Substantial hands-on experience in analytical chemistry.
  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience analyzing environmental samples such as soil, water, or air.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols in a lab setting and proper waste handling.
  • Practical skills in operating advanced equipment like Ion and Gas Chromatographs, Segmented Flow Analyzers, ICP-MS, TOC/TN analyzers, and similar analytical systems.
  • Ability to learn, develop, and refine analytical techniques and operate modern analytical instrumentation.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Experience managing a shared instrumentation facility or research laboratory.
  • Familiarity with laboratory billing or cost-recovery systems.
  • Experience negotiating with vendors for equipment purchases or service contracts.
