About the role

The Milk Plant Worker (S07) assists with the production and distribution of food and dairy products, adhering to all protocols, rules, regulations, and guidelines for quality, safety, and reporting, including those set forth by the USDA, FDA, and New York State Ag & Markets.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sanitary maintenance functions on dairy processing equipment and the processing facility, as required to meet all local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations and internal food safety plan.
  • Aid the management team in maintaining HACCP, quality control, and master sanitation programs.
  • Support and service research, instruction, and extension programs of the Department of Food Science, particularly those related to the procurement and processing of dairy products.
  • Assist with the inventory and receiving of raw materials; maintain inventory records as required.
  • Assist with tours of the facility as necessary.
  • Provide direction to undergraduate students, staff, and faculty and plant policies, protocols, and safety procedures and training on proper equipment usage.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with other team members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and a minimum of 2-3 years of practical dairy/food manufacturing experience and/or equivalent combination of training and education (college, trade school, or food processing work experience).
  • At least 1-2 years of experience operating food/dairy processing equipment.
  • Experience working in manual labor positions under various extreme climate conditions, including freezer and cooler work.
  • Ability to lift more than 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work overtime when necessary.
  • Prior dairy and/or food processing and sanitation experience.
  • Prior truck driving experience, including distributing food/dairy products, and a valid New York State Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required licenses and permits, including Milk Receivers Permit and Appendix N License.
  • General computer knowledge and data entry procedures.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with staff, students, faculty, and customers.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Personable, flexible, and capable of multi-tasking in a fast-paced industrial setting.
  • Takes pride in work and possesses excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide range of coworkers, faculty, and general public.
  • Self-starter, interested in learning about the operation and maintenance of equipment.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in an agricultural field.
  • Experience working in and around a university research setting.

  • Knowledge of food processing and sanitation standards.
  • Computer proficiency and data entry skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, industrial setting.
