Afforded Experience
As a Casualty Role Player, you will portray an injured civilian victim during a realistic mass casualty training exercise. Your participation is essential to giving Nebraska National Guard units lifelike experience they cannot get any other way.
Anticipated Duties
- Arrive at the training site by the specified time and report to the moulage station to receive simulated injury makeup (moulage) applied by professional moulage artists
- Receive briefing on your assigned injury type (for example: crush injury, burns, chemical exposure symptoms, trauma, panic), your injury card, and acting instructions
- Be placed in or near the Structural Collapse Venue Site (rubble pile) or exercise staging area according to the exercise scenario
- Portray your assigned injury / condition as National Guard soldiers locate, extract, decontaminate, and provide simulated medical treatment to you - repeating the cycle a minimum throughout the day
- Pass through the full exercise sequence: extraction from the rubble pile, decontamination (you will get wet — see preparation notes below), and medical holding area
- Transport yourself between the moulage station, rubble pile, and decontamination / medical areas by the McColm logistics team throughout the day
- Complete the exercise day (generally 0800-1700) and be released following the final iteration
Preparation Notes
- You will get wet. Role players pass through decontamination shower stations where prop clothing is removed and you are scrubbed with brushes and water (often cold water).
- You must wear a swimsuit or skintight undergarment (e.g., compression shorts/top, sports bra) under your prop clothing.
- You must not bring cellular phones, jewelry, watches, or personal valuables into the rubble pile area. McColm is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal items.
- Shower shoes / water shoes are required for the decontamination lane. These are provided by McColm.
- Costume prop jewelry (provided) will be placed on you for processing of casualty valuables during the exercise.
- You will work outdoors. September and November in Nebraska can include heat, wind, rain, and cold. Dress in layers where possible; the McColm team will have shelter available.
Mandatory Safety Training and Orientation
- Mandatory safety training and orientation will be provided before you enter any exercise area.
- Hard hats, eye protection, and gloves are required and will be provided for any role player entering the rubble pile.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must possess a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license or equivalent)
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Must be physically capable of walking, lying down on uneven surfaces, and being moved / carried by exercise participants. You will be asked about any physical limitations during intake
- Must be willing to wear moulage (simulated injury makeup) that may include simulated wounds, bruising, burns, or chemical contamination markings applied with safe, water-soluble products
- Must be able to follow simple acting instructions and maintain your assigned injury scenario throughout the exercise sequence
- Must sign a Release of Liability prior to exercise participation
- No prior acting experience, military experience, or medical knowledge is required
Benefits
McColm offers competitive day-rate compensation for role player participation. Compensation will be confirmed upon contract award and communicated to selected candidates prior to the exercise.
