Call Company Firefighter

About the role

The Town of Scarborough Fire Department is seeking applicants for the Call Company position. This role involves combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, responding to a wide range of fire suppression and medical emergencies, and protecting life and property.

Responsibilities

• Responding to a variety of fire suppression and medical emergencies in a community of 54 square miles with a year-round population of approximately 20,000 and a significant increase during the summer months.
• Training for and participating in firefighting and rescue activities.
• Participating in potentially hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion.
• Performing firefighting and rescue activities as part of a team.
• Engaging in routine station maintenance, equipment maintenance, and varied department duties.
• Completing specific orders and assignments given by a superior officer.

Requirements

• Reside within the Town of Scarborough or in a neighboring community within one mile of the Scarborough town line.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Hold and maintain a valid Maine driver's license.
• Pass a post-offer comprehensive physical exam as outlined in department's standards.
• Exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or currently be enrolled in a secondary education program.
• Mature, honest, compassionate, and able to work well with others.
• Able to interact positively with the public.
• Prepared to respond to Fire and EMS calls in all types of weather, day or night.
• Prepared for emergencies on/in the ocean, highways, residential neighborhoods, industrial areas, and agricultural settings.

Skills

• Firefighting methods learned on the job and in training.
