California - Social Media Manager (Part-time) UC Berkeley Cal Student Store

Our teams engage directly with students, faculty, administration, alumni, and the public to provide outstanding customer service while selling or renting books, general merchandise, and academic products.

About the role

The General Merchandise Supervisor is a part-time, customer-focused role requiring adaptability and creativity. You will assist customers with school supplies, electronics, dorm items, convenience products, gifts, and clothing while supporting the management team in daily store operations. As a subject matter expert in General Merchandise, you must also stay knowledgeable about other store areas to deliver exceptional service.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a presence on the sales floor to hang, fold, shelve, and peg merchandise according to planograms or merchandising guidelines.
• Use department-specific technology (e.g., CORE or Intrepid) to answer questions, recommend products, place orders, locate items, search inventory, and meet customer needs.
• Greet customers, describe merchandise, recommend products, and finalize sales.
• Clean the store and merchandise to maintain an appealing sales floor.
• Assist with processing sales transactions involving cash, credit, or financial aid payments.
• Perform routine housekeeping tasks such as dusting, mopping, window cleaning, vacuuming, and trash removal.

Schedule

Part-time positions require availability to work on a weekly basis year-round, with schedules that may be set or vary to meet store needs. Hours will be less than 30 per week.

Physical Demands

• Frequent movement within the store to access various departments, areas, and products.
• Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
• Frequent lifting.
• Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders.

Pay

Part-time General Merchandise Supervisors in California earn $21.75 per hour.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of retail experience preferred.
• Minimum age of 18 to be considered for employment.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Outstanding customer service skills to match customers with products that meet their needs.
• Basic reading, writing, and accounting skills required.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
