Cafeteria Worker

About the Role

Provide support to the food service activities at an assigned location, focusing on preparing and serving food items to students and/or school personnel while maintaining food service facilities in a safe and sanitary condition.

Responsibilities

• Clean linens, utensils, equipment, storage, food preparation, and serving areas to maintain sanitary conditions.
• Evaluate prepared food for flavor, appearance, and temperature to ensure acceptance by students and staff.
• Inspect food items and supplies to verify quantity, quality, and specifications, and comply with health standards.
• Inventory food, condiments, and supplies to ensure availability for projected menu requirements.
• Maintain records and reports (e.g., leftovers, opened cans, student lunch balances, money collection/reconciliation).
• Merchandise food and beverage items.
• Monitor kitchen and cafeteria areas to ensure a safe and sanitary working environment.
• Assist with the preparation, cooking, and serving of food.
• Perform functions of other nutritional service positions as requested by the manager.
• Prepare food and beverage items according to standardized recipes and established procedures.
• Serve appropriate portion sizes according to the planned menu.
• Receive food items and supplies, storing them in designated areas following temperature guidelines.
• Report needed supplies and equipment malfunctions.
• Perform related work as required.

Requirements

• Completion of 6 hours (if 20+ hours/week) or 4 hours (if <20 hours/week) of professional development annually.
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
• Ability to perform basic math, read and follow instructions, and understand multi-step written and oral instructions.
• Knowledge of safety and sanitation practices, quantity food preparation, and handling.
• Flexibility to work with others, handle job-related data, and utilize job-related equipment.
• Ability to work as part of a team, convey information, handle interruptions, and manage a variety of tasks.

Working Environment

• Physical demands include significant heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
• Job requires 5% sitting, 50% walking, and 45% standing.
• Performed under temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
