About the role
To establish and maintain a safe, clean, pleasant, and efficient atmosphere in the school cafeteria and at recess.
Responsibilities
- Monitors students during assigned mealtimes in the cafeteria and recess.
- Arrives promptly at the assigned area and ensures students return to their next activity safely and on time.
- Observes students’ verbal and physical actions to ensure a safe, orderly environment; patrols assigned areas in accordance with established procedures and training.
- Helps ensure the health and safety of students by following and enforcing school health, safety, and conduct rules.
- Assists students who need help with opening milk cartons and food packages.
- Maintains a reasonable noise level in the cafeteria and ensures appropriate student behavior toward staff and peers.
- Uses positive reinforcement and other techniques to assist students in developing appropriate behavior.
- Organizes students into orderly lines for food purchase and directs them to assigned tables at the start of each meal period.
- Encourages students to complete their meal within the allotted lunch period.
- Oversees orderly disposal of food waste, return of trays, and dismissal from the lunchroom to class.
- Resolves minor student conflicts using fair and firm strategies; escalates arguments, altercations, or disruptive incidents to the principal, counselor, or designated teacher.
- Treats all students in a fair, impartial, and respectful manner.
- Communicates calmly and non-confrontationally, modeling non-discriminatory practices and actively participating in the Schoolwide Positive Support Plan.
- Follows procedures for proper hand washing and glove usage.
- Maintains clean conditions in the cafeteria and dining area, including wiping tables between meal periods and sanitizing allergy-designated tables with approved cleaners.
- Cleans and sanitizes tables and seating before, during, and after meals, and at the end of the workday.
- Cleans floors of spills and debris in the absence of the building custodian.
- During recess, organizes and directs activities, ensuring safe use of playground equipment.
- Promotes positive student behaviors, including good sportsmanship.
- Reads, stays current on, and complies with school rules for students and employees.
- Complies with individualized education program or Section 504 plan provisions when working with students with disabilities.
- Interacts courteously with administration, staff, and students.
Requirements
- High School diploma required.
- All employment is provisional for up to 90 days pending receipt of required employment history reviews (Act 168 of 2014).
- Applicants must complete the Act 168 disclosure form and provide information for all current and former employers where they had direct contact with children.
- Final employment is contingent upon satisfactory review of all required clearances and background checks.
