Safely and reliably transport and assist students and other school district passengers to and from school, educational or sporting events, community-based programs, and other special activities in Cadillac, MI.

Pay

Earn up to $23.00 per hour, contingent upon program elections made at the time of hire.

Requirements

• Meet all general qualifications for employment
• Pass driving record check (company and state standards)
• Pass criminal history check (company, state, and school district standards)
• Meet Federal DOT guidelines and physical examination requirements
• Pass drug and alcohol screening as established by the company
• Successfully complete Dean Transportation School Bus Driver Training Program, including:
  • Classroom instruction
  • Behind-the-wheel instruction
  • Written and driving skills test
• Meet Michigan School Bus Driver Certification Requirements, including:
  • Minimum hours of instruction
  • Satisfactorily pass knowledge examination
• Meet local, county, and state standards for driving skills test
• Obtain appropriate commercial vehicle licensing (state requirements)

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of your assigned vehicle
• Use established routes and designated bus stops
• Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required
• Instruct passenger riders regarding safety
• Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather
• Prioritize the safety of passengers at all times
• Establish favorable working relationships with drivers, office and maintenance personnel, bus attendants, passengers, parents, teachers, principals, and school staff
• Attend training sessions, annual in-service, and workshops for self-improvement
• Keep accurate records and reports, submitting them legibly and on time
• Conduct yourself as a professional Dean Transportation staff member at all times
• Operate all vehicle lifts as prescribed in company policy
• Secure all equipment required for each passenger per company policy
• Lift, store, and disassemble/assemble wheelchairs (up to 40 pounds) and other ambulatory devices

Skills

• Operate all vehicle types used by Dean Transportation for passenger transport
• Familiarity with the geographic service area of the school district and assigned routes
• Knowledge of rules and regulations from local, state, and federal agencies
• Knowledge of state laws and local ordinances
• Manage exuberant behavior of student passengers
• Administer disciplinary procedures in accordance with company policies
• Exercise good judgment in emergencies and day-to-day operations
• Successfully conduct a bus evacuation drill as required

Driving Performance Evaluations

Driving performance evaluations are performed continuously as part of company safety training. Drivers may be subjected to customized evaluations at any time if the company has concerns or receives reports of improper driving.

Physical Requirements

• Open and close a bus hood to perform pre-trip engine inspections
• Open and close bus entrance and emergency doors
• Bend, push, and pull to load/unload wheelchairs (with or without passengers) onto a lift platform (exerting up to 40 pounds of push/pull pressure)
• Physically assist passengers into and out of the school bus
• Carry and lift personal articles and adaptive equipment of varying weights and sizes
• Bend and stretch for cleaning and securing equipment inside the bus
• Bend, stretch, pull, and drag persons, equipment, or other items of varying sizes and weights out of emergency exits
