CAD Technician I - Pittsburgh, PA

Location: Pittsburgh, PA • Full-time • $20/Hr

About the role

The CAD Technician I is an entry-level position focused on developing expertise in a specific drafting area—such as electrical, mechanical, or civil drawings—using a computer-aided drafting (CAD) system. Work is performed under direct supervision, with tasks reviewed or spot-checked during progress. Problems are escalated to a higher-level employee or supervisor. Incumbents are expected to build skills in their area of expertise and progress toward greater independence.

Responsibilities

• Create diagrams, schematics, layouts, multi-view, and various drawings to scale based on client requests.
• Perform mathematical, geometrical, and minor engineering computations.
• Produce scaled engineering drawings using a computer-aided drafting system.
• Develop detailed design drawings and related specifications for civil/electrical equipment from engineering sketches, specifications, and related data to determine design factors such as size, shape, and arrangement of parts. This includes:
  • Structure, schematic, foundation, grounding, steel, layout, equipment, apparatus, wiring, panel, AC & DC, one-line, and other drawings required for substation, relay, and line design job packages.
• File drawings, maintain catalogs of engineering data, and perform routine drawing room functions as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• 1–2 years of training at a technical school or equivalent experience.
• Proven AutoCAD and/or MicroStation skills.
• Strong PC/IT skills (e.g., Word, Excel).
• Ability to work with individuals from diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Experience producing engineering-quality drawings.
