About the role
CLA is seeking a Controller with Nonprofit industry experience to join our CAAS (Client Accounting & Advisory Services) practice based in Albuquerque, NM. The ideal candidate will work closely with clients to provide customized accounting services and support their business growth.
Responsibilities
- Develop internal control policies, guidelines, and procedures for budget administration, cash and credit management, and accounting.
- Cook up and direct financial planning, budgeting, procurement, and investment activities for the organization.
- Prepare financial information, including financial statements, business activity reports, financial position forecasts, budgets, and regulatory agency reports.
- Evaluate the need for procurement of funds and investment of surpluses, making recommendations as necessary.
- Maintain and monitor ratio and key performance indicators (KPI).
- Supervise the accounting team on each engagement, which may include both CLA staff and client staff.
- Deliver timely and accurate financial statements and statistical information to the client's leadership team.
- Implement financial and operational best practices related to the client's specific industry.
- Communicate regularly with boards, bankers, investors, and other stakeholders, including preparing for and hosting board presentations.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- CPA certification preferred but not required.
- 6 years of relevant accounting and/or financial experience, with a strong preference for nonprofit industry experience.
- Public accounting experience is preferred but not required.
- Aptitude for developing and maintaining a thorough working knowledge of accounting software and systems, with QuickBooks experience preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Frequent local travel to client sites and occasional non-local or overnight travel for client visits, training, meetings, and other business-related purposes.

- An understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (FASB/SFAS) or other comprehensive basis of accounting.
- Strong organizational skills and goal-oriented mindset.
- Ability to handle pressure positively and professionally.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proven success in managing work and key client relationships to exceed client expectations.
