The Buyer I supports the procurement of materials, components, supplies, and services required for production and business operations. This role works closely with suppliers, production planning, inventory management, and internal stakeholders to ensure materials are available on time, at the best value, and in accordance with quality standards. The Buyer I develops foundational purchasing skills while assisting with supplier management, order execution, and supply chain performance.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out follow-up and expediting activities to ensure on-time delivery as required by the production schedule.
  • Solicit and analyze quotations for new and/or existing items, recommending substitutes where cost savings can be achieved.
  • Interview suppliers regarding materials, terms, and lead-time to negotiate the best purchases for the company.
  • Assist all departments in obtaining proper specifications, quotations, delivery details, and cost information.
  • Contact suppliers to address quality issues and resolve reject issues in the company’s best interest.
  • Maintain files of catalogs, price lists, quotations, and other correspondence.
  • Handle all MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operations) plant supply purchases.
  • Review purchase order suggestion reports and place orders accordingly.
  • Check requisitions through Syteline and place orders as needed.
  • Communicate pick-ups and deliveries to the ROM truck driver.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 0-2 years of experience in purchasing, supply chain, inventory control, customer service, or related business functions.
  • Overall knowledge of purchasing functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external sources for purchasing-related information.
  • Strong communication skills to represent the company’s needs with vendors.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English, with adequate hearing and visual acuity.
  • Work environment is primarily in an air-conditioned cubicle, with occasional visits to unheated/air-conditioned manufacturing or warehouse settings.
  • Safety glasses with side shields are required in production areas.
  • Must effectively communicate on the telephone while entering data on a computer.
  • Frequent reaching, gripping, and carrying up to 50 lbs., as well as standing, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting, and walking.
  • Must handle multiple tasks and perform effectively in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to understand verbal and written instructions are required.
