About the role

The Business Unit Manager (BUMa) is responsible for maintaining positive operating margin at the laboratory level and for meeting and exceeding the annual budget. This role supervises all laboratory personnel, provides leadership and direction, and ensures compliance and integration of facility operation with corporate and regulatory policies and procedures. The Business Unit Manager serves as a liaison with corporate business partners and champions Company policies, vision, and mission.

• Oversee the technical conduct, quality control, and related record keeping of all analytical evaluations performed
• Supervise, organize, and coordinate all technical activities of personnel within the principles of sound scientific endeavors, business economy, and professional development of subordinate employees
• Provide planning, organization, direction, and control to meet company goals
• Ensure adherence to company health, safety, and environmental programs and maintain documentation
• Establish and maintain professional business relationships with clients, industry officials, and peers
• Assist in generating marketing strategies, prepare comprehensive technical work proposals, and maintain an influential position in business expansion plans
• Provide input toward the financial growth and development of the company
• Coordinate business activities with Business Unit Managers from other locations to meet customer expectations without duplication of testing activities
• Oversee the overall operational success of the laboratory, including budgeting, capital expenses, senior staff management, major client needs, revenue & profit growth, and cost control
• Manage daily operations including laboratory, quality, logistic, and managerial duties
• Represent the laboratory in technical meetings
• Participate with the Sales/Marketing team in the preparation and quotation of major technical studies
• Propose major investments to company executives
• Ensure laboratory expenses align with the annual budget
• Approve major expenses and control costs within established company guidelines
• Analyze monthly laboratory indicators (operating and labor costs, turnaround time, productivity, etc.)
• Verify that company employment policies and procedures are followed correctly
• Perform annual performance reviews for direct reporting personnel and coordinate reviews for other lab personnel
• Handle employee relation issues as per company guidelines with support from Human Resources
• Coordinate interaction between different laboratory departments
• Understand and follow each Quality System document relevant to employment responsibilities (e.g., methods, SOPs) and propose or approve changes when required
• Conduct all activities in a safe and efficient manner
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other related degree concentration, or equivalent directly-related experience (two years of directly related industry experience is equivalent to one full-time year of college in related major)
• At least 10 years of supervisory experience
• At least 10 years professional experience in laboratory operations with a minimum of 5 years of laboratory operations or large/multi-department/team leadership with profit/loss accountability - $5M+ Net Sales or equivalent size operation
• Demonstrated success in improving operational, profit, quality, and safety performance
• Familiarity with laboratory operations and services
• Familiarity with EPA, DOT, OSHA, and DOL regulations
• Excellent verbal and written skills
• Strong customer relations skills
• Ability to manage a business at a profit/loss responsibility level
• Ability to control operating budgets
• Ability to develop and enforce policies and operating practices
• Ability to prioritize and delegate responsibilities
• Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities
• Professional working proficiency in English, including the ability to read, write, and speak in English
