Summary Of Responsibilities
This rapidly growing general contractor has an exciting opportunity for a motivated business development professional with strong follow-through, integrity, and a relationship-driven mindset. The Business Development Professional is responsible for growing our client base, expanding work with existing partners, and supporting Engelke’s commitment to quality, service, and long-term relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a clear business development roadmap, including target markets, focus clients, and priority pursuits that support Engelke’s growth plan.
- Strive to maintain a healthy pipeline of qualified opportunities.
- Demonstrate a healthy mix of new and repeat business, reflecting both client acquisition and relationship retention.
- Research and pursue new opportunities with owners, developers, architects, engineers, and general contractors that fit Engelke’s capabilities and strategic direction.
Client Relationships & Market Presence
- Cultivate and maintain strong, long-term relationships with clients, design partners, and trade partners through personal attention and consistent, honest communication.
- Develop “champions” within client organizations and understand decision-making dynamics to position Engelke for success on key pursuits.
- Represent Engelke as an active leader in local industry, professional, and community organizations, with a focus on client and market-facing involvement.
- Maintain a strong network within the local A/E/C community, staying current on upcoming projects, market trends, and competitor activity.
Pursuit Strategy & Capture Planning
- Create and articulate clear capture and differentiation strategies for focus pursuits that highlight Engelke’s strengths, culture, and project approach.
- Support leadership with strategic pricing, budgetary proposals, and commercial strategies (fees, general conditions, and profit levers) to ensure competitive yet responsible submissions.
- Led development of high-quality proposals, interview presentations, and other client‑facing deliverables in collaboration with operations and marketing.
- Obtain debriefs on wins and losses, document feedback, and share insights to continuously improve Engelke’s positioning and strategies.
Collaboration, Negotiation & Risk Awareness
- Partner closely with preconstruction, project executives, and operations to align pursuits with capacity, expertise, and project delivery goals.
- Participate in contract, scope, and commercial discussions, demonstrating sound understanding of project financials and risk.
- Help ensure a smooth transition from pursuit to project start-up, maintaining client confidence and continuity.
Leadership, Coaching & Reporting
- Coach and mentor team members and operations partners on relationship-building, client communication, and basic business development best practices.
- Maintain CRM data and a personal business development roadmap accurately and consistently, including forecasting and activity reporting.
- Support a positive, family-friendly, and inclusive work environment that reflects Engelke’s values.
Essential Skills And Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in business, Marketing, Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field; equivalent industry experience considered. 8+ years of business development experience within the construction or broader A/E/C industry, with a track record of winning work and building relationships. Experience working with general contractors, specialty subcontractors, or related construction services organizations.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to shape impactful, client-focused proposals and presentations. Proven closing and negotiation abilities and comfort discussing commercial terms. Ability to maintain and grow long-term client and partner relationships, with a relationship- and sales-oriented mindset. Understanding of project financials, basic risk considerations, and how commercial terms impact project outcomes. Highly organized, self-motivated, and strategic, with strong attention to detail and follow-through.
