Business Development Manager - Workers Compensation Insurance

About the Role

Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Workers Compensation Division, is seeking a Business Development Manager in Michigan. This role focuses on business development efforts and brand strategy within a specified territory, including evaluating production patterns in new and renewal business to identify opportunities for profitable growth. You will collaborate with Business Development Managers, Underwriting management, and corporate resources to develop industry, class code, or segment-specific opportunities and monitor agency performance. Frequent travel within the territory is required. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Note: Previous insurance experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and executes territory plans with clear travel strategies aligned to regional opportunities and profit potential.
  • Positions BHHC as the market of choice for agents and target markets.
  • Proactively seeks new agency appointments, prospect meetings, book transfers, and additional production sources to drive growth.
  • Monitors agency growth and profitability, identifying performance gaps and developing improvement plans.
  • Manages agency partnerships to achieve minimum premium standards and growth goals.
  • Processes agency appointments and terminations in a timely manner.
  • Initiates renewal strategy discussions and ensures mutually profitable relationships with agents.
  • Conducts in-person agency visits, prospect meetings, claims reviews, and stewardship meetings.
  • Collaborates with Underwriting, Client Services, and Loss Control teams for strategic co-travel.
  • Educates agents on BHHC’s value proposition, target markets, and service model.
  • Acts as a resource to peers and brokers; senior-level roles may mentor other Business Development Managers.
  • Adapts to and implements new tools and processes quickly.
  • Participates in weekly underwriting meetings and contributes to discussions on large accounts.
  • Proactively pushes Underwriting to meet targets by ensuring timely quotes for agency partners.
  • Supports development of opportunities by industry, class code, or segment.
  • Gathers, analyzes, and evaluates competitor intelligence and territory opportunities through agency visits and events.
  • Develops action plans based on competitive intelligence.
  • Provides input for Agency Marketing Reviews and shares insights with peers and Underwriting partners.
  • Collaborates with Marketing, Underwriting, and IT to improve ease of doing business in templates, systems, and product offerings.
  • Develops and maintains accurate Producer Profiles, Business Plans, Agency Files, and Bravo contacts.
  • Documents New Business Not Taken, Active Submission Listing, Call, and Monthly Reports.
  • Maintains accurate President’s Circle information for assigned agencies and leverages the program for new business and renewals.
  • Serves on internal and external insurance committees, participates in charity events, and attends insurance conferences.
  • Expands knowledge in workers compensation and insurance to assist others as a resource.
  • Assists with special assignments and projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience in the workers compensation insurance industry (Mid-Level), or seven (7) years for Senior-Level, preferably in a Marketing or Underwriting role.

Skills

  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Able to effectively present information to management and public groups.
  • Proficient in developing, implementing, and communicating company programs, new business requirements, and agency action plans.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and able to quickly master proprietary and vended software applications.
  • Service-oriented with strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Able to promote and maintain strong, collaborative relationships.
  • Exhibits sound and accurate judgment with the ability to support and explain decision reasoning.
  • Able to plan and prioritize work activities, using time efficiently.
