Job Summary
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in providing safe transportation for physically and mentally handicapped students; monitor, assist and care for students.
Essential Functions
- Assists students with disabilities and other passengers (e.g. loading and unloading students safely from buses during normal transport and emergency situations; providing behavior support for student bus passengers; cleaning up after students as needed, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe transportation for students.
- Supports proper bus behavior and emergency procedures for the purpose of enforcing rules/regulations and maintaining student safety and wellbeing.
- Assists students in wheelchairs by loading and securing chairs before departure and assists Bus Driver to ensure students are safely fastened into their seats; secures seat belts, harnesses, tie downs and various adaptive and assistive devices; de-escalates aggressive student behavior.
- Maintains routine records and reports related to student behavior and assigned activities (e.g. incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and/or complying with established guidelines.
- Makes sure students with disabilities are released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. (e.g. providing necessary physical assistance, dialogue, reassurance, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all students.
- Determines appropriate action in potential or real medical emergencies according to established guidelines; administers first aid to passengers as needed.
- Facilitates activities on assigned bus (e.g. games, book reading, group conversation, etc.) for the purpose of supporting positive student behavior and learning.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
- Skills: Adhering to safety practices; preparing and maintaining accurate records; operating equipment used in transporting special needs students; administering first aid when required.
- Knowledge: Safety practices and procedures; age appropriate activities/behaviors; rules/regulations/policies related to student safety; general knowledge of child guidance, motivational principles for students with special education needs; District special education processes; bus transportation protocols for students.
- Ability: Observing health and safety regulations; understanding and relating to students with disabilities; working as part of a team; implementing required intervention processes; assessing issues; providing solutions.
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and demonstrated experience working with children with special needs.
Licenses and Other Requirements
- Valid certifications of First Aid, Adult/Child CPR and AED must be obtained within the first six months of employment or be submitted at the time of application.
- Only certifications provided by American Heart Association, American Red Cross or District approved provider for First Aid, Adult/Child CPR and AED will be accepted.
- Online certifications will be accepted from these vendors as long as a hands-on skills assessment is completed.
- Recertification to maintain current/valid status is a condition of employment.
