About the role

Transit Development (TD) within the Division of Transportation Planning & Management (TPM) is responsible for developing public transit-supportive street infrastructure and policies to improve mobility for all New Yorkers. The unit manages the Better Buses initiative and transit policy initiatives and develops location-specific projects to help the quality and safety of bus operations, and to improve pedestrian access to transit. TD also serves as a resource to the agency on public transit related matters, including acting as one of the key points of contact with the MTA agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Advance key initiatives related to the planning, design, and implementation of bus priority projects to improve the speed and reliability of bus operations on New York City streets.
  • Conduct data analysis, including evaluations of bus priority projects, GIS maps, and other technical traffic analysis.
  • Conduct outreach with the general public; work with community boards and other public stakeholders in public workshops, presentations, and other settings.
  • Work collaboratively within the TD unit, closely with other DOT staff, and with other city, state, and federal agencies (particularly the MTA).

Requirements

  • Candidates should have experience working on transportation or urban planning-related projects, with strong design, data, and outreach skills;
  • Experience with geographic data collection and analysis, particularly in the ArcGIS suite;
  • Experience with traffic analysis is highly desirable;
  • Familiarity with transit-oriented street design;
  • A capacity for problem-solving;
  • Experience with CAD and/or graphic design software is desirable.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working on transportation or urban planning-related projects, with strong design, data, and outreach skills;
  • Experience with geographic data collection and analysis, particularly in the ArcGIS suite;
  • Experience with traffic analysis is highly desirable;

Benefits

This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.

Pay

Salary range: $85,000 - $105,000 annually

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm

Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of satisfactory full-time experience in city planning;
  • A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience that is equivalent to 1 above. Graduate education in city planning, urban planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, transportation engineering, public administration, economic development or related fields may be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 graduate semester credits from an accredited college for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree.

Special Qualification Requirements

  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, one additional year of professional experience as described in "2" above.
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level IV, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, two additional years of professional experience as described in "2" above.

  • To be considered for this position, candidates must be serving permanently in the title of City Planner or be reachable on the open competitive civil service list for Exam No. 5045.

  • New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
