Bus Operator / Light Rail Operator, City (2200/2100)

Overall Description

As a bus operator you will drive vehicles along specified routes or to specified destinations according to time schedules, complying with traffic regulations, while ensuring that passengers have a safe ride and providing excellent customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drives passenger vehicle while following all safety procedures for vehicle operation.
  • Abide by all SEPTA policies and procedures.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to passengers.
  • Follow traffic laws, SEPTA policies, and safety regulations.
  • Aid passengers getting on and off the bus, including the elderly and those with disabilities.
  • Maintain fare collection and issue transfers when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers and report any incidents, delays, accidents or passenger emergencies.
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safety and maintenance compliance.
  • Prepare accident reports as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements.
  • A minimum of 3 years licensed driving experience.
  • Clean driving record in the last 3 years.
  • Ability to successfully complete employment interview, employment history verification, criminal background check and medical examination including drug screening.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, split days off, especially during first two years of employment.
  • Commitment to safety and excellent customer service.
  • Candidates without a high school diploma or GED must complete and pass a standardized assessment to qualify for this position.

Compensation/Hours

  • Competitive salary (starting pay determined by division location).
  • Current pay ranges from $25.29 - $26.43 (depending on what division you are assigned).
  • Maximum hourly pay is $37.76 per hour AFTER 4 years of service.

  • Operators will have a guaranteed 40 hours a week *Only guaranteed if physically working.

CDL/CDL Permit Requirements

  • If offered the position after interview candidates will be required to present either a Class B or Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement with no restrictions for driving vehicles with air brakes.
  • No CDL or Permit - You will be required to obtain a CDL permit (preferably Class B) before your tentative start date.
