Bus Monitor - Brownsville, Texas ($14.32/HR)

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a current list of children transported inclusive of daily attendance.
  • Conduct daily child health observation to determine child health status or injuries for children boarding the bus.
  • Obtain and secure child medications for proper pickup and delivery utilizing safe handling procedures and documenting such activities appropriately.
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of children during transportation, including securing children properly in appropriate child safety restraints prior to departure, monitoring children to remain secured throughout transportation, securing “Red Bags,” and loading/unloading children from the bus following Transportation policies and procedures.
  • Assist Bus Driver during emergencies and evacuation drills and ensure the vehicle is maintained in a sanitary condition.
  • Implement, monitor, and comply with bus rules during transportation, provide educational activities as part of school readiness efforts, and give feedback to teaching staff regarding observed behaviors/development during bus activities.
  • Act as a liaison between parents and center staff regarding center activities, child issues, and upcoming program events based on the PFCE Framework.
  • Provide child engagement through activities such as singing, fingerplays, stories, and positive conversations based on the HSELOF.
  • Ensure all children are properly released from the school bus to the parent, guardian, and/or designated person as documented in the child’s file.
  • Provide short-term relief (breaks) to classroom staff while under the supervision of a qualified teacher in the classroom or playground (contingent upon prior training and qualifications).
  • Provide interpretation services in the classroom, at home visits, and Parent/Teacher conferences as needed.
  • Assist in fulfilling staff/child ratios in classrooms, kitchen duties, or other center areas if a staff member is absent (contingent upon prior training and qualifications).
  • Assist the Bus Driver/Janitor to clean and maintain the building and playground as needed.
  • Transport and assist with supervision of children and parents during parent meetings, field trips, health clinic visits, and as assigned.
  • Participate in trainings for serving children with disabilities or special needs (e.g., children with wheelchairs, special car seats, or allergies) in accordance with the child’s IEP and/or IFSP.
  • Assist in ongoing recruitment plan activities, including recruitment of children with disabilities.
  • Provide support or T/TA to other locations (centers) with some travel requirements.
  • Attend all staff meetings, trainings, and other program activities as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED (dependent on each state’s childcare licensing requirements).
  • CDA credential required within 18 months of hire.
  • Ability to work irregular and flexible hours.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred (both oral and written).
  • Have dependable transportation to and from work.

  • Occasional pushing, handling boxes, bending, reaching, and standing for long hours.

  • Frequently exposed to moderate temperature generally encountered in a controlled temperature environment.
  • Occasionally exposed to moderate to high noise levels.
  • Required to ride in a school bus.
  • Occasionally exposed to bumpy travel conditions.

  • Phones and computer system.
  • Fax/copy machine, laminator, calculator.
  • First aid equipment and fire extinguisher.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check prior to employment.
  • Must complete a physical exam.
  • Must complete approved SIDS & Shaken Baby Training prior to working with children.
  • Fire Extinguisher Training, Infant/Child CPR, and First Aid upon hire or prior to transporting children.
  • Must complete a TB test screening showing absence of Tuberculosis within 30 days of employment or sooner as required by local/state regulation.
  • Position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
