Bus Mechanic (Level C)

About the role

Maintain and repair various types of buses and heavy equipment to ensure they are in proper working condition. The role requires a strong focus on safety, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance inspections and procedures (e.g., changing oil and filters, lubricating components, battery maintenance, compressed natural gas tank inspections).
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues on buses and heavy equipment.
  • Use hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, precision instruments, HVAC recovery equipment) and power tools (pneumatic wrenches, hydraulic presses).
  • Use computer programs (Cummins Insite, Allison DOC) for diagnostics and repairs.
  • Maintain and create records and work history within electronic repair orders.
  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and replace brake systems, fuel and emission systems, drivelines, steering and suspension systems, passenger heating/cooling systems, etc.
  • Use in-ground and above-ground hoists, portable hoists, and hydraulic jacks for inspection and repair.
  • Test drive/operate light-duty vehicles, trucks, buses, and support equipment to diagnose malfunctions or ensure proper operation.
  • Inspect, adjust, repair, and replace protective guards, loose components, and specified safety devices.
  • Perform vehicle chassis alignments.
  • Replace, repair, and maintain internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel) and transmissions and differential units.
  • Repair and adjust seats, doors, windows, interior and exterior trim, and hardware.
  • Install, diagnose, and repair/replace vehicle accessories.
  • Conduct emission-related diagnosis and repairs.
  • Perform minor fabrication, welding, grinding, soldering, etc.
  • Perform service calls on vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist in training lower-level personnel.
  • Perform backfill supervisory duties as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate a "safety first" attitude.
  • Preferably one (1) year of progressive heavy equipment maintenance experience.
  • Preferably two (2) years of technical education or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient in computer skills for repairing sub-components of various bus types.
  • Ability to understand and follow schematics.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft applications.
  • Experience with diagnostic computer equipment and software.
  • Ability to learn the design, maintenance, and adjustments of ADA equipment, air conditioning, brakes, chassis, cooling systems, engines, lighting, gauges, safety equipment, fire suppression systems, sensitive edges, tires, and transmissions.
  • Hands-on experience in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one to two years of vocational/technical schooling or equivalent work experience.

Pay

Starting pay: $25.50 per hour (Level C: Hiring Level).
