Responsibilities
- Identify and diagnose complex malfunctions with advanced diagnostic test equipment (Prolink & Laptop with vendor software).
- Test repaired and replaced equipment for compliance to state standards.
- Operate specialized power tools including but not limited to, head light machine, voltage regulator, tap and dye set, A/C recovery system etc.
- Repair and replace all Hydraulic and Air brake system components including antilock brake systems.
- Straighten damaged frames and other body components.
- Repair and replace U-joints, differentials, drive-lines, engines, transmissions, and front end and steering components.
- Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning.
- Repair, replace, or adjust starters and alternators, transmissions and clutch assemblies.
- Change tires from vehicle as well as removing and mounting on rims and using tire-balancing equipment.
- Understand oral and written instructions and interpret wiring diagrams, specifications and computerized reference repair manuals.
- Perform North Carolina vehicle inspections on school owned vehicles.
- Provide instruction to lower level mechanics in repair and maintenance procedures.
- Accept rotation on after hours pager service.
- Project positive image for this department.
- Perform any task listed on Pitt County Schools Mechanic 1 or Mechanic 2 job description.
- Perform other job duties as assigned by the Shop Supervisor, Inspection Supervisor, Director of Bus Operations, and Transportation Director or their designee.
Requirements
- Physical strength and agility sufficient to move relatively heavy objects and to perform manual labor for considerable periods.
- Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Meet physical fitness requirements as outlined by Federal and State CDL/School Bus licensing requirements.
Qualifications
- Five years experience in troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of heavy diesel powered vehicles or gasoline automotive equipment.
- Technical training in heavy diesel powered vehicles or gasoline automotive equipment preferred.
