About the role

This is an essential position in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. The Animal Care Technician is responsible for the daily care and treatment of animals brought to the shelter, reporting directly to the Animal Care Manager. The salary for this position is the minimum of the range.

Schedule

Wednesday–Saturday, 8:00 AM–6:00 PM.

Responsibilities

• Provide adequate food and water to shelter animals.
• Administer medications to all shelter animals on prescriptions.
• Follow established protocols for cleaning of all animal areas.
• Monitor all shelter animals for mental and physical well-being.
• Assist in animal intakes, including vaccinations, blood draws, and performing basic physical exams.
• Assist the medical team with filling prescriptions for shelter animals.
• Provide daily animal enrichment and training.
• Maintain up-to-date records in the shelter database.
• Treat all shelter animals with compassion and respect.
• Maintain Animal Services facilities in a safe working environment.
• Operate washing machines and other appliances.
• Address any structural concerns to the Animal Care Manager.
• Project and maintain a positive image with the public and peers.
• Show adoptable animals to potential adopters.
• Provide cordial, responsive, and accurate customer service.
• Participate in shelter events.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent; experience in animal sheltering preferred.
• Possession of a Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (or equivalent from another state) or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
• Become Fear Free Certified within 6 months of employment.
• Complete the following National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within the first year of employment:
  • IS-700: NIMS, An Introduction (for non-supervisory employees).
• Ability to read, comprehend, and follow instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to write simple correspondence and memos.
• Basic arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Physical Demands

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Requires standing for long periods of time.

Work Environment

• Exposure to loud working environment (barking dogs in kennels).
• Exposure to zoonotic diseases (e.g., ringworm, rabies, intestinal parasites).
• Exposure to fractious and aggressive animals.
• May work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and wet conditions.

Additional Notes

This position is designated as essential and may require reporting to or remaining on duty during closures due to inclement weather or other reasons. Employees may be required to work shift work, overtime, weekends, holidays, or remain on standby for callback. This position is part of the Queen Anne’s County Civil Service System, with a 12-month probationary period during which termination may occur without notice, cause, hearing, or right of appeal.
