Bus Driver (Full Time 6 hours per day)

About the role

This is a full-time bus driver position that requires taking weekend and evening field trips. The role comes with a 6-hour per day route pay guarantee and qualifies for medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. The starting hourly rate is $22.53.

The school bus driver will report to the Transportation Coordinator and will be responsible for supervising children who are passengers on the bus. The position goal is to provide safe and efficient transportation of students.

Responsibilities

• Cleans the bus and acquires necessary repairs and service as needed
• Completes mandated pre-trip prior to driving the bus each day
• Complies with all Ohio laws, ODE, and district policies and procedures related to mandatory random, reasonable cause, and post-accident drug/alcohol testing
• Obeys all Ohio and local traffic laws, ODE, and district policies and procedures
• Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
• Keeps to assigned schedule and route
• Directly supervises students on the bus at all times
• Maintains firm, fair, and consistent discipline when students are on the bus
• Enforces school bus regulations as outlined in the handbook and bus rules document
• Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority in writing
• Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops
• Transports only authorized students
• Completes and turns in route timing sheets, time sheets, and other reports/forms as required
• Notifies the proper authorities in case of mechanical failure or delay in arrival
• Notifies the proper authority in the event of hazardous road conditions
• Reports all accidents and completes required accident reports within 24 hours
• Attends all safety workshops and meetings as required by district administration
• Keeps the bus fueled at all times and uses established fueling procedures
• Uses proper grammar and correct spelling in using disciplinary forms and other reports
• Uses the bus radio in a professional manner and only for school/safety-related business

Qualifications

• Must be 21 years of age
• Must have the physical capability of performing and perform a daily pre-trip inspection as mandated
• Must be physically able to wear a seat belt
• Must be physically qualified as determined by an annual physical examination meeting the criteria established by the Ohio Department of Education, Form T-8
• Must complete pre-service and in-service training, as per Rule 3301-83-10 of the Administrative Code
• Must hold a current commercial driver's license or be willing to obtain one (training can be provided)
• Must demonstrate the ability to cope with stressful situations as related to all students, including students with disabilities
• Must possess or upgrade skills through formal and/or in-service training related to the transportation of students, including students with disabilities
• Must have a satisfactory work history and driving record as verified through professional references and a report from the State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, FBI, BMV, and/or county or local law enforcement agency
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and all job-related drug and alcohol screens as required under Ohio law

• Contacts parents and attempts to work out problems
• Maintains a good rapport with the students
• Obtains pre-approval for memos or notes to parents of all students on the bus route

• Communicates a positive image of the school district at all times
• Maintains the confidentiality of school and department-related issues
• Defuses rumors with regard to school matters among drivers and/or in the community
