Bus Driver

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt | Reports to: Principal or Designee | Terms of Employment: Part-time

About the role

It is the responsibility of the school bus driver to operate the school bus in a safe and efficient manner and to abide by all state traffic laws, State Board of Education regulations, and local school board regulations.

Requirements

• Must be 21 years of age with HS diploma or GED
• Possess a valid Class A or B CDL with a "P" (Passenger) and "S" (School Bus) endorsement
• Meet vision and hearing requirements
• Acceptable driving record
• Must be insurable
• Must pass background check and pre-employment drug screen

Responsibilities

• Conduct a thorough pre-trip (using the school's Daily Bus Inspection form) and post-trip inspection of the school bus
• Keep exterior mirrors clean and adjusted at all times
• Perform a minimum of one school bus evacuation drill each school year utilizing appropriate emergency procedures per semester (documented in the checklist log)
• Know, recognize, and obey road signs and signals by meanings, shapes, sounds, and colors
• Keep the interior of the bus clean
• Maintain routes and schedules as planned by the local school board
• Report any hazards along the existing route to appropriate school officials
• Exercise effective defensive driving skills of self-control, alertness, foresight, and good judgment at all times while operating the school bus
• Maintain discipline on the school bus without jeopardizing safety while driving
• Complete all reports on bus discipline, bus maintenance, and any other reports required by the school board
• Remain alert at all times to hazards, including but not limited to poor weather conditions, other vehicles, road conditions, and trains at railroad crossings
• Ensure students do not stand in the step well, loading area, or where they could likely fall out of the bus if the rear emergency door was opened, or where the driver's view is obscured
• Agree to mandatory drug testing as part of the hiring process, random testing, post-accident testing, and testing if recommended by the driver's supervisor
