Northern Arizona University Shuttle Services provides safe, reliable, and accessible transportation for the NAU campus community. Our team operates scheduled campus shuttle service designed to connect students, faculty, staff, and visitors with key locations across campus.

About the Position

The Bus Driver operates university transit buses along designated routes and schedules, transporting students, faculty, staff, and visitors throughout campus. This position is responsible for maintaining a high standard of safety, customer service, and schedule adherence while operating in a busy university environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent driving skills, sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively with students, campus departments, coworkers, and the public. The role requires the ability to safely operate a large transit vehicle in varying weather and traffic conditions while maintaining awareness of pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles.

This position is open to current NAU employees and Partner Assistance Program Partners only. It is an on‑site role; opportunities for remote work are rare. Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is a regular part of the job, and all drivers must be authorized under the Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy.

Responsibilities

• 75% – Transportation: Drive a bus, tram, or van to transport passengers along a scheduled route on campus or to events locally or within the state; perform pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle inspections; conduct service and maintenance such as interior/exterior cleaning and light‑bulb replacement; conduct bi‑weekly vehicle inspections; report safety hazards, suspicious activities, or property damage; handle charter assignments as needed.
• 15% – Communication: Provide directions and assistance to campus members and guests with questions or issues related to university shuttle services; update shuttle data to ensure accurate and timely information.
• 5% – Data: Keep vehicle and passenger logs; help enter and compile data related to NAU shuttle services; participate in training, events, and operations supporting department mission and goals.
• 5% – Administrative: Assist with scheduling and organizing training; perform occasional administrative tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma.
• 1 year of relevant experience.
• Valid Arizona Class D driver’s license.
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B or Class C (not required if the vehicle transports 1‑15 passengers).

Driving Requirement

Driving high‑occupancy or CDL‑class vehicles between campus locations is a required job activity. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business to become authorized by submitting driver’s license information for driving‑record monitoring and completing training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university‑owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. • Associate’s degree.
