Position Summary
Under close supervision, transport pupils, faculty, and other approved riders between designated pick-up/drop-off points and school or activity trips. Maintain order during all routes, adhere to traffic and district safety rules, and follow applicable laws, regulations, and school-system policies.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalency
- Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License
- Pass a special performance test demonstrating skill in driving a school bus
- Knowledge of traffic laws, district policies, and transportation regulations
- Ability to gain respect and cooperation of students, parents, and officials; maintain discipline
- Complete a required bus-driver’s course
- Communicate and understand both oral and written instructions
- Comply with the physical limits and essential duties of the position
Responsibilities
- Obey all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses
- Maintain discipline when students are on the bus; follow district and transportation discipline procedures
- Provide written reports on a Bus Conduct Form the day of any infraction to appropriate school personnel
- Document severe discipline infractions on a Bus Conduct Form no later than the conclusion of the route, signed by Director/designee if possible, and send to the appropriate school authority
- Handle minor discipline problems by assigning seats and documenting as outlined by the Director/Administrator
- Perform daily pre-trip inspection of the bus using the provided form; report any problems affecting safe transportation to the Director of Transportation
- Maintain an accurate, up-to-date description of assigned routes, including authorized stops, times, and other requested information
- Run the route as scheduled; implement approved changes to benefit transportation students
- Wait for any student(s) who can be seen making an attempt to catch the bus
- Pick up and discharge students only at authorized stops; transport only authorized riders
- Notify appropriate transportation personnel in case of mechanical failure or lateness
- Make at least a 15-second stop at all authorized bus stops unless otherwise instructed
- Report all route delays to the transportation office
- Use two-way radios professionally, keeping communications necessary and courteous
- Report all employment-related accidents (personal, student, or vehicle) to transportation personnel as soon as possible, no later than departure from transportation following the conclusion of job responsibilities
- Complete all related reports, forms, and information requests within the allocated time frame
- Adhere to and enforce all district policies
- Comply with the Transportation Handbook and any changes implemented by the Administrator/Director of Transportation
- Check the bus before each operation for mechanical defects; keep the assigned bus clean
- Maintain a valid Oklahoma DCL License and any licensing required by the State Department of Education
- Attend all scheduled meetings and in-service training sessions
- Promote a positive image through proper dress, conduct, and school bus operations; interact professionally with parents, patrons, and school personnel
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for students transported
- Perform other duties as assigned
