Bus Driver
About the Role
The School Bus Driver, under the direction of the Transportation Management Team, is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. The Driver ensures the school bus is in good operating condition, picks up and drops off students as per the schedule, maintains order and security on the bus, and adheres to all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct. The role involves interacting courteously and respectfully with BGCGSD members, parents, staff, and the public, including addressing complaints about schedules and service quality.
Responsibilities
- School Bus Operation
- Transport children, parents, and staff by driving a school bus or passenger van to and from school and special outings, adhering to driving rules and regulations for safety in California.
- Maintain the safety of BGCGSD’s fleet by routinely checking for visual defects and operational systems.
- Communicate daily with the Transportation Coordinator and serve as a positive role model for BGCGSD members through appropriate conduct.
- Pick up members at assigned stops, instruct safe boarding procedures, take attendance, and enforce loading/unloading safety rules.
- Interact professionally with members, parents, staff, and the public, including addressing and reporting complaints about service.
- Safety
- Adhere to current safety protocols, including face coverings, social distancing, and frequent hand washing.
- Enforce transportation seating guidelines outlined by BGCGSD and the State of California.
- Conduct daily health, wellness checks, and temperature screenings as per current guidelines.
- Enforce safety and discipline rules, and follow all vehicle and driving laws.
- Implement emergency plans in case of accidents, administer first aid, and complete accident reports.
- Complete annual classroom and behind-the-wheel training to maintain a valid CA School Bus Driver Certificate.
- Maintenance
- Complete daily pre- and post-inspection logs for safety and security before locking the vehicle.
- Assist with transporting vehicles for scheduled maintenance as requested.
- Clean assigned vehicles (interior and exterior) to ensure safety, appearance, and sanitation.
- Maintain fluid levels (oil, water, fuel), check tire pressure, and inspect for body damage.
- Report any maintenance or repair requirements to the Transportation Coordinator.
- Safety & Wellness
- Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment by enforcing safety protocols and organizational policies.
- Proactively identify and report safety concerns or maintenance needs.
- Participate in safety drills and contribute to risk assessment and emergency preparedness efforts.
- Contribute to improving Club safety and wellness policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years of relevant driving experience.
- Valid California Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or CDL (Class B) with Passenger, School Bus, and Air Brake Endorsements.
- First Aid and CPR Certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Verification of a safe driving record via DMV H6 printout.
- Ability to operate a school bus safely, follow route sheets, and comply with guidelines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to monitor passengers and maintain discipline for safe transportation.
- Strong oral and written English skills, with basic math and writing abilities for reports and logs.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate professionally with a diverse population.
- Knowledge of road rules, safety practices, and procedures.
Preferred: Experience as a school bus or heavy-duty vehicle driver.
Special Conditions of Employment: Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, compliance with the organization’s drug-free workplace policy, verification of influenza, pertussis, and measles immunizations, and possession of a DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
