Bus Assistant

Responsibilities

• Aid students in entering or exiting the bus safely.
• Show highest ethical standards and personal integrity; report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior to supervisor or manager.
• Secure students using seat belts, car seats, or wheelchair restraints as needed.
• Maintain safety regulations and student conduct rules; exercise student management through communication and discipline.
• Document and report any violations or conduct concerns to appropriate authority.
• In case of emergency, assist in evacuating passengers safely.
• Absorb and transport students' belongings when they leave the bus.
• Keep the vehicle clean and presentable during and after shifts.
• Complete required paperwork and submit it promptly.
• Display professional behavior and promote company goodwill.
• Report to duty on time and perform all tasks safely.
• Attend all assigned training, safety meetings, and in-service meetings.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old; 19 years old for New York School Bus Assistants.
• Meet physical and medical requirements.
• Satisfy all training requirements and attend safety meetings and in-service meetings.
• Show attention to detail and dexterity to handle various restraints and equipment.
• Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Be able to lift and assist students as necessary.

• High degree of attention to detail and dexterity.
• Ability to relate to and work well with children.
• Strong professionalism and diplomatic skills.
• Ability to maintain effective pupil behavior management.

Pay, Benefits & Schedule

• Pay for routed bus assistants is $17.44 per hour.
• Paid Training at $16 per hour.
• Bonuses - Retention bonus up to $1500 after 1st year of employment.
• Eligible for Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers Act (PLAWA).
