Bus Assistant

Responsibilities

  • Aid students in entering or exiting the bus safely.
  • Show the highest ethical standards and personal integrity; report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior to a supervisor or manager.
  • Secure students using seat belts, car seats, or wheelchair restraints, as needed.
  • Maintain vigilance over passengers to ensure compliance with safety regulations and student conduct rules.
  • Communicate and apply discipline according to company policy in cases of misconduct.
  • Assist in the evacuation of the vehicle during emergencies, ensuring all passengers are accounted for.
  • Ensure children take their belongings with them when leaving the bus.
  • Help the driver keep the bus clean and presentable.
  • Complete required paperwork promptly and submit it to the appropriate department.
  • Behave professionally and promote company goodwill at all times.
  • Be punctual and perform all tasks safely.
  • Attend all assigned training, safety meetings, and in-service meetings.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old; for New York School Bus Assistants, must be at least 19 years old per state law.
  • Must meet physical and medical requirements.
  • Must satisfactorily complete and pass all training and attend safety meetings and in-service meetings to remain qualified.
  • Must have a high degree of attention to detail and dexterity to safely use various types of restraints and secure wheelchairs.
  • Must be able to relate well to and work effectively with children.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism and diplomacy when interacting with students, colleagues, parents, and school district personnel.
  • Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to lift and assist students when necessary.

Pay

The pay range for Bus Assistant is $15.50 per hour, with paid training at $15 per hour. Employees also receive holiday pay and accrue paid time off.
