Buildings & Grounds Technician

Job Type: Full-time – Day Shift (8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Location: 3935 Sunnyside Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801
Hours: Full-time, non‑exempt; days vary.
Starting pay will vary based on job‑related skills, experience, and qualifications.

Position Overview & General Responsibilities

• Swiftly address and complete maintenance requests and necessary repairs throughout the Sunnyside Campus.
• Perform repairs, preventative maintenance, and facility operations support as needed.
• Conduct regular inspections and preventive maintenance tasks to identify and resolve potential concerns before they disrupt daily operations.
• Complete work orders regularly and follow instructions for assigned tasks and essential daily functions; seek clarification when information is unclear.
• Promptly address and complete maintenance requests, performing repairs to various systems, including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, and general building upkeep.
• Support overall facility operations.
• Create and maintain a safe, efficient, and pleasant environment for all occupants.
• Record and report all time and materials used for projects.
• Safely use a wide variety of tools necessary for various jobs.
• Work independently with minimal supervision, completing tasks within reasonable time frames.
• Assist with and/or complete emergency maintenance tasks, obtaining additional support if needed.
• Correct problems or recommend necessary contract services.
• Report and/or correct unsafe working conditions or equipment to supervisors immediately.
• Return all equipment to the proper location promptly and keep workstations and work sites neat and orderly.
• Assist with room set‑up and tear‑down for events.
• Assist with emergency drills (fire drills, evacuations, etc.).
• Remove snow and ice from campus roadways, driveways, parking lots, walkways, entrances, and other areas.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in general maintenance/repairs preferred.
• Ability to process information accurately, make appropriate decisions, and take appropriate action based on available information.
• Basic working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and heating & cooling (HVAC) systems.
• Current Virginia driver’s license and compliance with driver eligibility requirements per Sunnyside policy (HR069 preferred).
• Strong customer service skills with a hospitality approach to engaging all individuals.

Physical & Environmental Considerations

Work Environment: Primarily indoor, with occasional outdoor work that may involve varying temperatures, surfaces, and landscaping grades.

Physical Demands: Frequently required to sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push, and pull items weighing 50 lb or less and occasionally more than 75 lb. Requires manual dexterity, auditory and visual skills, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Work Hazards: General hazards related to tool operation and maintenance systems; wet, icy, or muddy surfaces; exposure to heat and cold; minimal hazards when universal precautions are followed.

Pay

$17 – $26 per hour.
