About the role
Serves as a building supervisor in an elementary or special education school or in an administrative building; supervises custodial staff and participates in the full range of cleaning, maintenance, operation, and security activities; oversees custodial training program for assigned staff.
Responsibilities
- Plans, assigns, supervises, instructs, and assists assigned custodial staff.
- Sets performance level expectations for cleaning buildings, maintaining grounds, using equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Establishes work schedules.
- Ensures employees operate as an effective working unit.
- Affords assistance to school-based administrator in determining work schedules and approving leave.
- Counsels employees and resolves informal complaints and grievances through discussion.
- Reports on employees' work hours and performance.
- Makes daily inspections to ensure that prescribed standards are maintained with respect to plant equipment, property, and grounds.
- Requisitions and distributes equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Performs and/or ensures that preventive maintenance, adjustments, and minor repairs are performed.
- Supervises and participates in maintaining outside of building by removing snow and ice, mowing lawns, maintaining shrubbery, picking up paper and debris, removing and emptying containers of standing water.
- Ensures that proper safety and security precautions are observed.
- Affords assistance to school and community groups that use the building to provide adequate custodial services.
- Moves and transports furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks, and other supplies, manually or with mechanical assistance.
- To support performance evaluation: Completes performance evaluations, in conjunction with plant operations monitor, of lower-graded staff, with final approval by school-based administrator.
- Affords assistance to the plant operations monitor and school-based administrator in developing progressive disciplinary actions.
- To support hiring: Assists the school-based administrator with the hiring of all custodial staff by participating in selection advisory committees.
- Provides technical guidance on the custodial operation, to aid in the hiring process.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
- Some experience in public building operations, in a custodial personnel oversight or supervision role.
- Must successfully complete the FCPS Custodial Certification Course prior to or within one (1) year of appointment.
- May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis.
- Knowledge of custodial methods, equipment, procedures, and cleaning materials.
- Ability to train, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of assigned staff.
- Ability to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare routine reports.
- Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
- Ability to work cooperatively with employees, students, and the public.
- Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
Major Duties/Essential Functions

Work Environment/Physical Requirements
- This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel.
- There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises.
- This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
