About the role
The CLASSIFICATION is Building Service Worker - Facilities Maintenance Department (Afternoon Shift: 4:30 pm - 1:00 am, Monday-Friday: Depending on the needs of the department)
Responsibilities
- Performs various custodial tasks in the care and maintenance of Municipal Buildings and facilities.
- Example: sweep, mop, wax, and vacuum floors; polish furniture, desks, chairs, shelves; wash woodwork and windows, etc.
- Operate heavy-duty floor machines, vacuum cleaners, buffers, etc.
- Clean and maintain lavatories; move records, furniture, and other equipment as required; gather and dispose of refuse.
- Performs additional duties as required.
Requirements
- As Determined By the City Of Southfield
- Must be a high school graduate or equivalent, preferably supplemented with classes from a vocational trade school.
- Minimum of 6 months of full-time experience in commercial cleaning is preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of cleaning and maintenance equipment and ability to operate same.
- Physical condition sufficient to perform essential functions of the position, including bending, standing on one's feet, overhead lifting, and the ability to climb ladders to complete cleaning assignments.
- Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and meet the City’s driving record standards.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to work effectively with others.
- Must be available for overtime as needed.
- Must pass an extensive level 2 background investigation conducted by the Southfield Police Department prior to appointment.

Pay
- Starting Salary: $17.53**
- Additional Premium Pay shall be twenty-five cents ($0.25) per hour for the afternoon shift.
- Uniform allowance of $500.00 per fiscal year.
- New Hires will receive their first allotment of $250.00 with their first paycheck.

Supplemental Information
- The selection process will include the completion of a City of Southfield application, a review of the applicant's qualifications, driving record and criminal history check, and an oral board interview.
- Selected candidates will be subject to an extensive level 3 background investigation prior to employment.
- Each step of the process must be passed before the applicant will be moved to the next step.

- Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be notified by email to attend the oral board interview.
- Applicants must maintain all minimum requirements and certifications while waiting for consideration for employment.
- Names of the successful candidates will remain eligible for consideration for nine months from placement on the eligibility list.

Supplemental Tuition Reimbursement
- 75% reimbursement for tuition and fees (excluding late fees) for city-related classes or degree programs with a grade of "B" or better, up to $2,500 annually, plus 75% for required books.
Residency Bonus
- Annual residency bonus of 1.5% of annual salary by Jan 1st with proof of residency.
Supplemental EAP
- Elected officials and contractual employees ineligible.
- Family Medical Leave Act worked up to 1250 hours or one year. Can take off time to care for a medical emergency for themselves or immediate family members for up to 12 weeks unpaid.
- Absences approved by BASIC or FMLA vendor.
Flexible Spending Accounts and Dependent Care
- Flexible Spending Accounts and Dependent care through TASC are pre-tax funds that are used to cover certain out-of-pocket medical expenses and childcare costs.
- A total dollar amount is elected, and a debit card is sent to you to pay for incurred expenses.
- There is an annual election limit of $3,300 for 2025.
