BUILDING INSPECTOR I/II

Clark County Building Department supports employee development by providing training and covering approved, job-related certification and examination costs, including ICC certifications required for successful performance of the position and career advancement, in accordance with County policy.

Responsibilities

• Perform plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and building inspections of new and existing residential and light commercial projects to ensure compliance with reviewed plans, locally adopted codes, and standards.
• Monitor, analyze, and provide guidance on special inspection activities for medium to large complex projects, including inspections of soils, concrete, structural steel, welding, masonry, fire stopping, wood, and permit scope.
• Inspect new and existing industrial, commercial, and/or residential properties for conformance to codes, regulations, plans, specifications, and standards.
• Drive a personal or County motor vehicle to inspect sites and attend meetings.
• Confer with developers, engineers, architects, property owners, and others regarding code requirements, alternatives, and County policies; resolve complaints and problems.
• Investigate complaints of existing buildings to determine appropriate usage and hazardous or life safety conditions.
• Review plans and specifications for buildings and related construction involving installation, remodeling, replacement, and repair for use in performance of inspections.
• Document and maintain accurate records of inspections, actions taken, and regulatory efforts; prepare written reports and correspondence; issue notices to correct code violations.
• Work with District Attorney staff to prepare cases of violations; testify in court as required.
• Oversee and provide quality assurance inspections for all contract inspection work performed for the County; may oversee a specified program area.
• Develop and maintain knowledge of construction technology, methods, and materials; update code knowledge through regular training sessions.
• Develop and conduct training programs for less experienced inspectors in area(s) of expertise.
• Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
• Use a variety of standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.

Requirements

• Valid ICC or other nationally recognized inspection certifications must be submitted at the time of application. Applications missing this information will only be considered for the Building Inspector Trainee.
• Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment.
• Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, physical examination, and pre-employment drug testing.
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Building Inspector Trainee: High school diploma or equivalent plus two (2) years of full-time work experience or college-level coursework in construction, architecture, engineering, or a related field. Upon completion of two (2) years of full-time comparable building inspection training and attaining a valid ICC certification (residential/commercial building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing inspector, or special inspector), promotion to Building Inspector I is possible.
• Building Inspector I: Equivalent to two (2) years of college coursework in construction inspection or technology, pre-engineering, or a related field, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a trade, plus two (2) years of full-time journey-level experience in the specified trade area. Must possess a valid ICC or other nationally recognized certification in one of the following: commercial building inspector, commercial electrical inspector, commercial mechanical inspector, commercial plumbing inspector, residential inspector, or special inspector.
• Building Inspector II: In addition to the requirements for Building Inspector I, one (1) year of full-time experience in the inspection and enforcement of building codes. Must possess a valid ICC or other nationally recognized certification in one of the following: commercial building inspector, commercial electrical inspector, combination inspector, commercial mechanical inspector, commercial plumbing inspector, residential mechanical inspector, residential inspector, or special inspector.

Pay

• Building Inspector Trainee: $26.70 - $39.50 hourly
• Building Inspector I: $31.20 - $46.05 hourly
• Building Inspector II: $33.65 - $49.74 hourly

Physical Demands

• Mobility to work in a typical office setting, use standard office equipment, and drive a motor vehicle to attend meetings and inspect properties.
• Strength and stamina to inspect various residential, commercial, or industrial properties, including standing for extended periods, stooping, kneeling, walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, scaffolding, and stairs.
• Strength to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
• Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
• Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
