BUILDING INSPECTOR
This position is covered by the Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Non-Supervisory Collective Bargaining Agreement. A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained. Residency in Nevada or neighboring California communities (Truckee, South Lake Tahoe, or Susanville) is required as of the first day of work.
About the Role
Under general supervision, performs skilled building inspection and enforcement work regarding construction and safety codes and ordinances.
Responsibilities
- Interpret and apply building codes while providing clear guidance to contractors, property owners, and the public.
- Exercise sound judgment and make fair, consistent decisions when conducting inspections and enforcing building codes.
- Identify construction deficiencies and recommend practical, code-compliant solutions.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and manage competing priorities.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Demonstrate a commitment to public safety, exceptional customer service, and ethical decision-making.
Requirements
- One year of progressively responsible experience in building inspection and code enforcement, or in reviewing architectural, structural, electrical, or mechanical plans, or as a licensed general contractor; OR an equivalent combination of related training and experience.
- ICC Residential Building Inspector (B1) certification and one additional ICC certification in building, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing at the time of application (must be maintained).
- Must obtain an ICC Residential Combination Inspector certification within one year of appointment (must be maintained).

Pay
New employees are hired at the minimum rate of the salary range. Eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until reaching the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current employees are placed at the minimum rate of the new salary range or a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.
