Building Inspector
Essential Functions
Aid the Superintendent of Buildings in performing their duties.
Inspect work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the Massachusetts Building Code and other applicable codes.
Review plans, specifications, and calculations for building permit applications.
Ensure that all plans and specifications comply with relevant codes.
Inspect existing buildings for life safety purposes and inspect new construction, alterations, and additions to buildings.
Enforce provisions of the zoning ordinance.
Inspect construction to ensure compliance with submitted plans.
Respond to complaints related to dangerous situations.
Issue letters of violation and pursue court action when necessary.
Instruct contractors, architects, engineers, and homeowners to correct non-compliance with applicable codes.
Requirements
- Five years of experience in supervision of building construction or design and zoning enforcement.
- An Associate's Degree in a related field is desirable.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Massachusetts Certification as a Local Building Inspector required within 18 months of employment.
- Valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license and a dependable vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of materials and methods of building construction and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the Massachusetts Building Code and other applicable state statutes, rules, and regulations.
- Knowledge of accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation, and safe egress.
- Ability to enforce codes and regulations fairly and impartially.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
- Ability to interact effectively with the general public, construction personnel, technical personnel, and state and local officials.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain complete and accurate inspection records.
- Ability to stay informed of code changes.
- Excellent communication skills and public relations skills.
