About the Role
As a Building Engineer, you will monitor, maintain, and repair building system operations, including plumbing, electrical, painting, roofing, heating, and cooling. This role is part of the Engineering and Technical Services function, focusing on support, preventive maintenance, and equipment repairs.
First 6 weeks will include intensive training, followed by work order management, vendor coordination, and shipping/receiving tasks.
Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance and repairs on mechanical, plumbing, structural, furniture, fire, life safety, and control systems.
- Maintain facility and building systems to applicable standards.
- Comply with codes, regulations, and safety directives.
- Manage an energy efficiency program for optimal system performance.
- Implement a preventive maintenance program to extend equipment life.
- Conduct emergency repairs as needed.
- Follow safety protocols for hazardous materials storage and disposal.
- Maintain a clean and safe workplace.
- Inspect building systems (fire alarms, HVAC, plumbing) to ensure operational design capabilities.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of standard principles to solve complex problems.
- Mentor others and share expertise across job disciplines.
- Lead by example, aligning with company values to build consensus.
Requirements
- High School Diploma, GED, or trade school diploma with 1–2 years of relevant experience (or equivalent experience/education).
- Universal CFC certification preferred; additional certifications/licenses as required by local/state jurisdictions.
- Prior shift management or supervisory experience is a plus.
- Physical ability to stoop, stand, walk, climb stairs/ladders, and lift/carry 50+ lbs.
- Strong judgment and analytical skills to evaluate multiple information sources.
- Willingness to explore new perspectives on existing solutions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Advanced organizational skills and an inquisitive mindset.
- Sophisticated math skills for financial and percentage-based calculations.
Skills
- Must Have: General maintenance, excellent verbal/written communication.
- Nice to Have: HVAC experience, electrical experience.
- Soft Skills: Professionalism, customer service, eagerness to learn.
Pay
$43–$45/hr (W2).
Schedule
Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–2:30 PM.
Location & Duration
Emeryville, CA 94608. 12-month contract with potential extension or conversion to full-time employment.
Work Environment
Client-facing role across two laboratory research buildings. Mix of independent work and collaboration with the chief engineer.
