Building Enclosure Designer

Department: Building Science Location: Orlando, FL Lerch Bates is seeking a Building Enclosure Designer to join our Design & Performance Studio. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented design professional who enjoys solving complex building challenges, developing technical construction documents, and collaborating with architects, engineers, and consultants to improve building performance. As a Building Enclosure Designer, you'll support the design and documentation of building enclosure systems for new construction, restoration, rehabilitation, and modernization projects. Working alongside experienced architects, engineers, and building enclosure consultants, you'll help develop constructable, code-compliant solutions involving facades, roofing, waterproofing, glazing, curtain walls, air barriers, and other critical enclosure systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop expertise in building science, building enclosure design, and building performance while contributing to projects that improve the durability, resilience, energy performance, and long-term success of buildings. Building Enclosure Design & Documentation Prepare accurate construction documents, technical drawings, details, and specifications using AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and related softwareDevelop building enclosure details for façade systems, curtain walls, glazing, roofing, waterproofing, exterior cladding, and air and vapor barrier assembliesInterpret architectural and structural drawings to support coordinated, constructable design solutionsApply building science principles related to moisture management, thermal performance, air control, and durability to enclosure system designsAssist with building code research, technical evaluations, and enclosure system analysis Building Science Research & Material Evaluation Research building enclosure materials, products, and systems to support project design decisionsAssist in preparing technical specifications and supporting project documentationEvaluate material compatibility, system performance, and constructabilityStay current on industry trends, building science practices, codes, and emerging technologies Project Coordination & Delivery Collaborate with architects, engineers, consultants, and project teams throughout project developmentParticipate in design reviews, coordination meetings, and production effortsCommunicate project progress, technical questions, and potential design issues proactivelySupport delivery of projects that meet quality, schedule, and documentation requirements Construction Support & Professional Development Assist with construction administration activities, including shop drawing reviews, RFIs, submittals, and field coordinationParticipate in site visits, field observations, mock-ups, and building enclosure performance testing as neededDocument field conditions and assist in preparing technical reports and project documentationContribute to internal technical standards, drawing libraries, specification templates, and continuous improvement initiatives What You’ll Bring Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Structural Engineering, Building Science, Construction Management, or related discipline.2+ years of experience in architectural drafting, building enclosure design, technical design, construction documentation, or related design work.Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.Understanding of building enclosure systems, including roofing, waterproofing, facades, glazing, curtain walls, and air/vapor barrier systems.Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, specifications, and construction documents.Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience with building science, building enclosure consulting, or facade design.Experience supporting restoration, rehabilitation, or historic preservation projects.Familiarity with building energy performance, moisture management, and enclosure testing.Experience with BIM workflows and construction administration activities.Interest in pursuing professional licensure or building enclosure certifications.
