About the Department

The Office of the County Executive plays a central role in leading and supporting the work of Marin County government. We serve as the primary office serving the Board of Supervisors and help guide Countywide operations, strategic planning, and policy development. Our responsibilities are broad and interconnected. We manage the County’s $860 million budget, coordinate cross-departmental efforts, lead public communications and engagement, and support major initiatives such as climate resilience, housing, racial equity, and emergency preparedness. We also oversee internal operations, including County facilities and key administrative functions that keep local government running smoothly. Our office brings people together—within government and across the community—to address complex challenges and improve services for all residents. Qualifications

The Budget Director must possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and five years of progressively responsible experience in budget preparation, financial analysis, and/or public administration. This experience must include a minimum of three years of supervisory experience. Additionally, a Master’s degree in public administration, finance, business administration, or a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, is required. Knowledge of financial management principles and practices, budget formulation, and fiscal forecasting is essential. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively collaborate with various departments and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Overall leadership, coordination, and management of the County’s $902.6 million (FY 2026-2028) annual budget preparation, implementation, and fiscal projections.
  • Oversee the County’s budget processes, including revenue forecasting, expenditure tracking, and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including legislators, community organizations, and other government agencies.
  • Provide guidance and support to department heads in developing and implementing departmental budgets and ensuring alignment with overall County goals.
  • Monitor and analyze budget performance against actual results, making adjustments as needed to ensure fiscal sustainability and alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate with other County departments to identify cost-saving opportunities and implement best practices in financial management.
  • Prepare and present budget recommendations and reports to the Board of Supervisors and other decision-making bodies.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal budget laws and regulations, and prepare necessary documentation for audits and reviews.
