About the Role

The Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) Director is responsible for the direction of the total ministry on the local campus. In addition to coordinating the campus ministry, they will assist in the work of the local Baptist churches in the campus community as the BSM joins with these churches in a total ministry to students.

Responsibilities

• Direct the total local BSM ministry based upon the vision adopted by the BGCT (aka Texas Baptists) Center for Collegiate Ministry (aka TXBSM): to engage the 1.6 million college students in Texas to follow Christ and transform the world, which finds expression through the participation of students in evangelism, discipleship, missions, and church life.
• Develop and implement strategies for:
  • Evangelism: Strong evangelistic skills. Share the Gospel with every student on campus through outreach and training opportunities.
  • Discipleship: Develop student leadership, enlist new students, create worship opportunities, and facilitate meaningful Bible study.
  • Missions: Involve students in Texas Baptist Student Missions (Go Now Missions), short-term projects, local mission experiences, outreach to international students, and sacrificial giving to missions.
  • Church Life: Lead students to engage with local Baptist churches, consult with collegiate leadership, and build relationships with local church staff and Baptist Associations.
• Work effectively with the local leadership group to provide a student ministry program appropriate to the campus and acceptable to local Baptist churches.
• Facilitate a ministry of care and encouragement for students, campus faculty and staff, and local church workers.
• Administer the budget in alignment with TXBSM and BGCT-approved goals, including planning, reporting, and financial accountability.
• Engage in Ministry Partner Development (MPD) for the local BSM personnel and program budget.
• Supervise the local Baptist Student Center (if applicable), including:
  • Proper care and use of facilities, furnishings, equipment, and property.
  • Maintenance of the center, including contracting janitorial and yard services.
• Attend required meetings and training, including:
  • New Worker Training, TXBSM Annual July Staff Meeting, Supervisor Training.
  • Local Executive Board meetings, leadership group meetings, and student leadership meetings.
  • Weekly BSM programs, mission trips, and personal discipleship meetings with students.
• Communicate with the Center for Collegiate Ministry through monthly financial reports, student missions forms, and semester/yearly ministry reports.
• Provide direction and supervision of direct reports, including:
  • Professional growth and development.
  • Goal-setting, monitoring, evaluation, and feedback.
  • Annual performance reviews.
• Coordinate Bible teaching programs (if offered on the local campus).
• Maintain compliance with BGCT’s employee policies, state and federal laws, and regulatory requirements.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• In-depth understanding of a comprehensive field of knowledge, generally acquired through an earned master’s degree from an accredited seminary (Baptist Seminary preferred).
• Active membership in a church supportive of the BGCT that is also a cooperating church within the Association and supportive of local BSM ministry during employment.
• Commitment to Christian principles and teachings both professionally and personally.
• Knowledge of and commitment to traditional Baptist distinctives, denominational structure, and church programs.
• Ability to relate positively, influentially, and sensitively to a broad spectrum of persons in various relationships and settings, including students, faculty, clergy, laity, institutional staff, Baptist organizations, churches, and board members.
• Ability to communicate the vision of BSM both locally and statewide at the association and local church level.
• Work under close supervision with clear expectations while exercising independent thinking and initiative, especially during the first three years.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to report proficiently on local BSM ministry.
• Strong listening, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
• Excellent organizational skills, ability to multitask, and manage a variety of tasks.
• Demonstrated leadership skills to influence people and achieve desired outcomes.
• Ability to develop strong, consistent leadership among students and assist them in discovering and exercising their spiritual gifts.
• Administrative skills for staff selection, development, motivation, scheduling, and evaluation.
• Understanding of Scripture and theology, with a commitment to lifelong study and personal growth.
• Strong evangelistic skills and proficiency in sharing the message of Jesus Christ appropriately in various contexts.
• Ability to lead students in sharing Christ on campus through a variety of methods.
• Recognizable speaking gift for addressing groups or congregations.
• Ability to mentor individuals and lead small groups for discipleship development.
• Personal spiritual discipline that models proactive spiritual and relational health.
• Willingness to enlist ministry partners through alumni and church contacts.
• Ability to travel, including overnight stays and weekends.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Google Suite (Gmail, Gcal, Google Drive).
• Ability to speak, read, and write English clearly and proficiently. Spanish language skills are a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to grasp, push, pull, carry, or manipulate objects, including:
  • Use up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
  • Lift, transport, and set up materials up to 50 pounds for up to three hours per week.
• Ability to bend, stoop, climb step stools, and reach for items above or below.
• Ability to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods.
