Job Summary
The classroom teacher under the direction of the school principal is responsible for creating a positive learning environment where students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, lifelong learning, and citizenship skills. Teachers maintain a safe environment, establish rapport with students, parents, and colleagues, and motivate students to achieve academic and personal growth.
Essential Functions
- Teach the core content area(s) outlined in the USBE's Core Curriculum, and adopt other approved learning activities.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to students' needs.
- Utilize effective teaching techniques to translate lesson plans into productive student learning experiences.
- Use computers and other technological classroom support equipment in student instruction.
- Supervise students through organization and appropriate discipline strategies.
- Evaluate students' academic and social growth, maintain appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
- Be familiar with and willing to implement Proficiency-Based Learning in evaluating students.
- Be familiar with and willing to implement the Granite Way.
- Communicate with parents through conferences, telephone calls, emails, student planners, school website, and other appropriate means.
- Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff regarding the student's academic and personal growth areas.
- Create an effective learning environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Maintain a safe and supportive environment in the classroom and on the school campus.
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Participate in faculty meetings as required.
- Administer appropriate student attendance policies and procedures.
- Participate in appropriate educator evaluation procedures as per district guidelines.
- Administer group standardized tests in accordance with state and district testing procedures.
- Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Select and requisition books and instruction materials; maintain required inventory records.
- Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, colleagues, and members of the community.
- Understand and adhere to laws, district policies, and procedures.
- Maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school staff, district staff, and members of the community.
- Demonstrate professional ethics as outlined by the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.
- Be a positive role model.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong computer and educational technological skills.
- Works independently with little direct supervision.
- Accepts responsibility and is self-motivated.
- Establishes and maintains a positive learning environment and handles classroom management issues in a calm manner.
- Demonstrates effective multi-tasking and time management skills.
Required Training and Education
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- A valid Professional Educator License for the State of Utah within the relevant "Licensure Area of Concentration" and if applicable, "Endorsement."
- A Utah State Board of Education (USBE) approved cleared criminal background check.
